The M.R.S. folks are right that this struggle is serious, and that we can't simply do nothing. SO: I'd like to ask you a favor, something that I think will have greater effect than mailing all those business reply cards. As I've just posted (though the posts don't seem to arrive in any order), we in N.M. have just gone as far as we could this session towards securing a gay rights act in New Mexico. The legislators who supported it did so with great zeal and courage. I'd like you to phone them and/or write them thank-you notes; we will need the same support in 2 years' time, and I want these folks to know they are appreciated. Letters can be written to Sen. ***** or Rep. *****, at this address: The State Capitol Building / Santa Fe NM 87503. On the outside of the envelope, write: "Letter of thanks. Please forward." Here are the heroes: Sen. Tom Rutherford -- he introduced the bill in the Senate Sen. Manny Aragon -- President pro tem of the Senate; did an amazing amount of work on it, really great. Rep. Cisco McSorley -- introduced the bill in the House Rep. Raymond Sanchez -- Speaker of the House; supported the bill Sen. Liz Stefanics -- only openly queer legislator, got lots of hate mail and death threats Sen. Mary Jane Garcia - got death threats for supporting bill Sen. Cynthia Nava -- strong supporter Sen. Fernando Macias -- strong supporter Sen. Dianna Duran -- Republican who supported the bill (!) Rep. Gary King -- Chaired House committee that gave Do Pass to bill Rep. Mariano Torrez -- voted against tabling Rep. H. John Underwood voted against tabling Rep. William Porter -- strong supporter Rep. J. Paul Taylor -- strong supporter Rep. E. Shirley Baca -- strong supporter If you can phone before Sunday, the number is 505-986-4300 for all legislators. This seems to me at least as effective as sending the subscription cards in.
