The New Mexico Anti-Marriage Resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 10, is dead as the Legislative session ended moments ago, at 12 noon, Thursday, February 15, 1996. The resolution called for a Constitutional Amendment to prohibit the "solemnezation" of same-sex marriages, and invalidate same-sex marriages preformed elsewhere. The Anti-Marriage Resolution was never called for a hearing or vote in any committee, and received suprisingly little press coverage. The Senate Rules Committee had tried to pass it on to another committee, but that action was blocked by Senate leadership, and the Resolution was never considered further. Anti-marriage legilsation is being considered in 18 states, and the Christian Coalition has bragged that they are trying to get it introduced in all 50 states. New Mexico activits expect the anti-marriage proposal to return in the next legislative session in January of 1997. Gay and Lesbian organizations in New Mexico are beginning a year long effort to educate the public about same-gender marriages. A community forum will be held on March 11, 1996 in Albuquerque as a kick off to that process. -Bob Summersgill
