18 March 1993, 1100 CST The Minnesota State Senate has passed on a preliminary vote (37-30) an amendment to the Minnesota Human Rights Act for sexual preference and orientation. While the vote is a preliminary vote, no further debate is expected prior to the final vote next week (Monday), which is seen as a formality. The Minnesota House of Representatives is expected to vote on the measure this afternoon. Governor Arne Carlson (R) has stated publically that he supports the legislation and will sign the bill when it reaches his desk. (I will try to post a copy of the final legislation.) This action would make illegal discrimination in public employment, housing, and other areas protected under the statute. Earlier in the day, the Minnesota State Senate approved a similar measure (37-30). Governor Arne Carlson, a Republican, has stated his desire for passage of the legislation and that he will sign the bill when it reaches his desk. While these votes are "preliminary," final votes are scheduled for next week. These "final" votes are seen as something of a formality and no additional debate is anticipated. I will post what news articles I get my hands on on Friday. James Edward Mackay mackay@milo.nodak.edu
