LAWRENCE (AKA LAPACHECO2VAXSAT.VASSAR.EDU) asked for a reference to the latest DoD Directive that keeps Gays and Lesbians out of the US Armed Forces. The following quote of a quote and footnote come from Richard Mohr's _Gay/ Justice_ on pages 194-95. "...As of January 16, 1981, the Pentagon has seven, official, articulated reasons for banning gays: The presence of such members adversely affects the ability of the armed forces [1] to maintain discipline, good order and morale, [2] to foster mutual trust and confidence among servicemembers, [3] to insure the integrity of the system of rank and command, [4] to faciliate assignment and worldwide deployment of servicemembers who frequently must live and work under close conditions affording minimal privacy, [5] to recruit and and maintain members of the armed forces, [6] to maintain the public acceptability of military service, and [7] to prevent breaches of secur- ity." The footnote begins: "The current exlusion of gays from all branches of the military is contained in Department of Defense Directive 1332.14, _Federal_ - _Register_, January 29, 1981, 46(19):9571-78." Most major universities have the _Federal_ _Register_. If you are not sure that you library has it, ask your friendly librarian. You are probably not far from a Federal Documents Depository library. Richard dismisses the first six reasons because they appeal to prejudice and bigotry, and claims the worry about breaches of security is a red herring.
