This special alert comes to us from the SERVICEMEMBERS LEGAL DEFENSE NETWORK which, among other things, helps young military people deal with the legal aspects of military life and (in)justice with regards to their orientation. ***ATTENTION FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND FRIENDS OF FEDERAL EMPLOYEES. YOU CAN HELP SLDN THIS FALL!*** The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is a program through which federal employees can designate non-profit organizations of their choosing to receive contributions each pay period. SLDN is one of the participating organizations you can choose! We ask those of you who are a federal employee to consider designating Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) as a recipient of your contributions through the CFC. Or if you have a friend who is a federal employee, encourage them to designate SLDN. Our CFC number is #2617. ***MILITARY MEMBERS*** We also want to alert those of you who are in the military what designating SLDN or other organizations doing work related to "gay" issues means to you under current regulations. We know of no cases over the last three years where servicemembers have been investigated or faced punitive action because of their CFC designation. You should be aware, however, that your commander and others may have access to the list of organizations you designate through CFC. There is always a potential risk that you will need to assess. No one's sexual orientation should be assumed by their charitable giving. SLDN fights to stop harassment, witch hunts, discharge and imprisonment of servicemembers harmed by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue." SLDN has directly assisted more than 1,300 servicemembers in three years and has trained hundreds more about their legal rights. We greatly appreciate your commitment to protecting servicemembers targeted by the military's anti-gay policy through your letters, emails, faxes and phone calls in response to SLDN's action alerts. Please consider furthering your commitment to SLDN by choosing it as a recipient of your payroll deduction in 1998 or tell a friend who is a federal employee to designate SLDN. If you have any questions about this issue or face any problems please call us at (202) 328-FAIR for free, confidential counseling. For more information about how to support SLDN, please contact Mary Ester at (202) 328-3244. **** SLDN's CFC NUMBER IS #2617 **** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Is there any truth to the rumor that the Promisekeepers are latent bisexuals?" --moi ~~~~~~ Fred and Martin, strangers before all but 16.7% of the law. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
