Military recruiters have a quota to meet. When schools hand over students' names, the students and their families are often hounded by repeated unwanted phone calls. Because of these same quota pressures, there has been a consistent pattern of military recruiters making promises to students that the military can not and does not keep. Unfortunately, unlike in civilain jobs, it is illegal for military recruits to quit. To protect student's privacy rights, several school districts, including San Diego, CA, have decided to keep student lists confidential. Many Colleges and School Boards, including the Board in Rochester, NY, have non-discrimination policies prohibiting recruiting by companies and organizations that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. These schools refuse access to military recruiters because the military refuses to stop discriminating. Other school boards, such as Richmond, CA, noting that military recruiters disproportionately target schools in low-income neighborhoods, have limited access to military recruiters on that basis. Accordingly, we, the following college students, high school students, school administrators, educators, and concerned community members, oppose this violation of the principle of local control.
