U.S. House of Representatives votes on the military ban on Gays and Lesbians. September 28, 1993 Rollcall Vote #460 Rep. Meehan's (D-MA) Amendment to the DoD Authorization (HR-2401) that sought to strike the provision regarding homosexuals in the military; and express the Sense of the Congress that the issue should be decided at the discretion of the President. Rejected 169-264. After a capitulation by the President to Bigots in the Military and Congress, Congress went a further step to codify the military ban into law. The ban would remain in effect even with this attempt to stop codification. Gays and Lesbians supported the Meehan Amendment. Rollcall Vote #461 Rep. Hunter's (R-CA) Amendment to the DoD Authorization (HR-2401) that sought to require the Department of Defenseto ask individuals entering the armed forces if they are homosexual or bisexual; and whether the person engages in, or has a propensity to engage in homosexual acts. Rejected 144-291. This amendment would require active pursuit of gays and lesbians in the military. Gays and Lesbians oppossed the Hunter Amendment. Rollcall Vote #462 Rep. Skelton's (D-MO) Amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization (HR-2401) that codifies the military ban without several of the helpful provisions to which the military agreed. Codification removes DoD or Executive discretion on this policy. Approved 301-134. After a capitulation by the President to Bigots in the Military and Congress, Congress went a further step to codify the military ban into law. Gays and Lesbians oppossed the Skelton Amendment.
