Here's a letter I received from Anna Eshoo several weeks ago. -- Jim Smith jes@netcom.com smith_jim@tandem.com --------------------------------------------------------------- 14th District, California June 6, 1993 Dear Mr. Smith: Thank you for contacting me with your support for lifting the ban against gay and lesbian personnel in the armed services. I appreciate knowing your concerns on this issue. Both the Secretary of Defense Les Aspin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, have publicly acknowledged that gay and lesbian service members perform their job well, demonstrate bravery and loyalty to our nation, and do not represent security risks. I find no legitimate reason to preserve the ban on gay and lesbian personnel. There is no excuse for categorical discrimination against any group of Americans. Inappropriate sexual conduct regardless whether it is heterosexual or homosexual should be prohibited. However, our nation is dedicated to protecting the civil rights of all its citizens and I, too, am determined to protect the rights of any individuals. I oppose this outdated and intolerant policy. Once again, thank you for contacting me and please do not hesitate to contact me in the future with this issue or others that are of concern to you. Sincerely, (signed) Anna G. Eshoo
