WASHINGTON - A group hoping to make the military more tolerant of gays and lesbians says it will mail homosexual literature to Navy ships in November. *MORALE* officers will be asked to distribute homosexual and lesbian materials, including Out magazine, as part of what a group called the Military Reading Project calls an educational campaign. Project directors said OUT magazine is one of several publications that a service member could have gotten in trouble for under the Pentagon's previous policy on gays in the military. Specifically, the service member could have been investigated for possible homosexuality for owning such publications. The Pentagon's new policy says that possessing and reading homosexual publications will not, by itself, constitute a basis for investigation of possible homosexual orientation. The magazine is taking part in the project to test that policy, said a group spokesman. Pentagon officials said they were unaware of the Military Reading Project and would not predict what morale officers aboard navy ships would do if the m aterial arrives. ### (end) Used without permission from The "Army Times" Oct. 11, 1993 Emphasis added above.
