The American Legion has issued a press release stating that it wants the ban on gays in the military continued, but that it is not part of the recently-organized coalition opposing gays in the military. Here is the press release from the American Legion. I am not a member of the American Legion, and am simply passing the press release along. American Legion Not Part of Coalition Opposing Gays in Armed Forces To: National Desk Contact: Lew Wood, 317-635-8411, or Mike Schlee, 202-861-2730, both of The American Legion WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 -- The American Legion is not a member of the newly formed Coalition to Maintain Military Readiness, and will not participate as part of this coalition at the national or grassroots level, as reported in several news accounts today, according to Legion National Commander Roger A. Munson. "The American Legion as a matter of long-standing policy, does not join in coalitions, committees, associations, or groups, unless directed by action of its National Executive Committee (Board of Directors). Such has not been done in this case," said Munson. "A legion staff member acting as an observer did attend a meeting Dec. 1 which reportedly formed such a coalition, but clearly explained American Legion policy concerning participation in such groups," he said. However, the 3.1 million member American Legion, the nation's largest veterans organization, does in fact have a policy concerning homosexuals in the armed forces. In a statement last month, Munson said, "The American Legion is in total support of the Department of Defense position that homosexuality is incompatible with military service. That policy is paramount to the good order and discipline of the military, which the legion has traditionally supported." The legion has asked President-elect Bill Clinton to reconsider his decision to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the armed forces, and consult with the nation's military leaders past and present before taking action. -30- -- Canada Remote Systems - Toronto, Ontario World's Largest PCBOARD System - 416-629-7000/629-7044
