Senate Bill 1231 -- the Minimun Sentencing for Sex-Related Crimes bill -- will be up for a vote on the Senate floor today sometime after 4 PM. This bill, among other things, makes "crimes against nature" (which includes sodomy) punishable by at least one year in prison. Presently there is a maximu m sentence (5 years) but no minimum. LEGAL is presently discussing the SB1231, and a potential amendment to delete this portion of the bill, with several senators. ****************************************************************************** WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP Contact your senator. Tell him or her that you are not in favor of a mandatory minimum for sodomy -- which is included in "crimes against nature," and that you would be in favor of an amendment to delete this portion of SB 1231. ****************************************************************************** To contact your senator, dial (504) 342-2040. Remember, if this bill becomes law, anyone arrested for crimes aginst nature in Louisiana will face at least one year in prison for the act.
