The Senate Human Rights Bill (SB 981) and the Senate Equal Employment Bill (SB 1045), authored by Sen. Johnson, D-New Orleans, will be reviewed Thursday, 11 MAY, in the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee. (These two bills were to be heard last Thursday in this committee, but, for lack of a quorum, they were held over until this Thursday.) ****************************************************************************** ABOUT THE HUMAN RIGHTS BILL (SB 981) AND THE EQUAL EMPLOYMENT BILL (1045): Both bills make it unlawful to discriminate against an individual in the hiring/firing/promotion process because of an individual's sexual orientation. SB 981, however, goes a step further to include housing and financial transactions. These two bills DO NOT: - provide for preferential treatment to anyone, - provide for quotas of any kind, - apply to the Federal governmnet or the military or, - apply to religious organizations. They simply say that it should be unlawful to discriminate based upon an individual's sexual orientation and that people should be judged on their merits. ****************************************************************************** WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP: LEGAL urges you to contact your legislators if they are on the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee (see list below) and ask them to support these two bills. Utilize the information provided above and let your legislator know how such a law would affect your life as well as the lives of friends, family members, loved ones. (If you know any individuals in Louisiana who live within the constituency of legislators on this committee, alert them to these bills and ask them to contact their legislators.) ****************************************************************************** To contact a senator if his or her line is busy, call 504-342-2040. ****************************************************************************** Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee CHAIRMAN Sen.
