Date: Mon, 01 Aug 94 00:46:08 EDT From: Jeff Jones I just am reading my mail and have here a listing of the resolutions and positions adopted by the Kentucky Republican Party during the June 4 annual convention here in Lexington. With the elections fast approaching, I thought this might interest people and get some discussion going since these are issues affecting us all: -resolution calling for English as the "official language" of the US -resolution opposing abortion -resolution in support of prayer in schools -resolution opposing gun controls such as the Brady Bill -resolution opposing health care reform -resolution calling for a "full and complete evaluation" of KERA -resolution calling for the recriminalization of consensual oral/anal sex between members of the same sex even in the privacy of the bedroom -ironically considering the above, the GOP also issued a resolution calling for "limited government and limited taxation with more personal freedom and more personal responsibility by individuals..." For a taste of the opinion of the GOP for gay/lesbian Kentuckian taxpayers, here is Resolution VIII: "Whereas, the AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are serious threats to public health and whereas, a violation of physical and moral union of the opposite sexes leads to physical, mental and social dysfunction, disease, and death, ....Be It Resolved, that the Republican Party of KY supports letting KY voters decide the issue by placing a constitutional amendment [note: thus making KY the only state in the Union with such an amendment and in direct violation of the right to privacy afforded in the KY constitution] to reinstate the ban on homosexual sodomy [defined as oral or anal sex] on the ballot before the voters." So, if you are gay, a woman, English isn't your first language, don't believe that KY's tax monies should go to fund legal battles over prayer in school, sodomy laws, etc., then you might not choose the GOP this year in your voting. (Thanks to The Letter for listing of these resolutions.) ---Jeff Jones---------------------------JAJONE02@ukcc.uky.edu------------ Dept. of Geography, Univ. of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506 -------------------------------------------------------------------------
