Events at the University of Kansas campus include lectures by Greg Louganis, Michelangelo Signorile, Brenda and Wanda Henson, Lani Ka'ahumanu and Tim Wise, guaranteeing that hose who attend the week-long series will learn about AIDS/HIV, civil rights, hate crime and feminist issues in the Lesbian and Gay community. Seats for Louganis' lecture are selling fast, according to organizer John Bennett. Tickets are $10, but seating is limited so people are encouraged to make early reservations. The champion diver will speak at 8 pm April 5 in the Kansas Union Ballroom. For tickets call 913/864-3477. Signorile--author of Queer in America, columnist for Out, infamous outer and AIDS activist-- will speak at 3 pm and 7:30 pm April 7 in the union. Wanda and Brenda Henson are the founders of Camp Sister Spirit, a Lesbian/feminist educational re-treat in Ovett, Mississippi. In the past eighteen months, the Hensons and the volunteers at the camp have faced more than seventy hate crimes. The partners will speak at 2 pm April 2 and 10 am and 2 pm April 3 in the Kansas Union. Ka'ahumanu, a civil rights activist and feminist, is the founder of BiPol, a political action group. She will speak at 8 pm April 4 and 10 am and 2 pm April 5 in the union. Wise is the activist credited with organizing the defeat of David Duke in a governor's race in Louisiana. He will speak at 2 pm and 8 pm April 6 and 10 am April 7 in the union. The celebration also includes a Pride March on Mass Street and a picnic in South Park on April 8. The parade begins at 10:30 am. Awareness Week ends with a prom in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Most of the Awareness Week events are free. For more information call 913/864-3091.
