FHSU president Edward Hammond said the NAMES Project Foundation in San Francisco approved the school's request to display 888 panels in Gross Memorial Coliseum from September 21-24. Each panel in the Quilt commemorates the life of someone who has died of AIDS-related complications. "I'm very pleased to join with community members, students and members of our staff who worked so hard to bring this quilt to Kansas and western Kansas," Hammond said in a statement to the press. The president thanked Patti Scott, director of student health, and IB Dent, director of the University Activities Board, for their work in bringing the Quilt to Hays. "I think the quilt's display here is going to be an eye-awakening experience for our students, faculty and staff," Hammond said, adding there will be a lot of local interest in the quilt as several families in western Kansas have expressed la desire to bring their own sections of quilt as part of this event. Work on the Hays' display began about a year ago. The display will likely fill Gross Memorial. Volunteers are needed to help set up the display, provide comfort and information to people viewing the Quilt, read the names of people memorialized with panels and take down the display. People interested in helping should call 913/628-4293. ========================================================== Permission granted by the News-Telegraph for distribution to the KQN email list (KQN@casti.com), and archiving in the Queer Resources Directory (QRD) on the Internet (http://www.qrd.org/QRD).
