Co-presidents for the remainder of this year and for the 95-96 school year are Heather Nelson and Shel Larry. Bob Clark is the new faculty advisor for BGLS. Heather, Shel, and Bob have many plans for BGLS. First, they want to make BGLS a place where all incoming g/l/b students can come to meet other members of our community. They also hope to build a group which will be well-integrated with men and women. Next, they plan to introduce themselves to various members of the university faculty, staff, administration, and student groups so that everyone will know how to reach a g/l/b representative. At the same time, they want to work very closely with the Flint Hills Alliance. The new officers also hope to hold both a week-long conference in October of 1995 and a Saturday conference in March of 1996. The October conference, which will coincide with National Coming Out Day, will feature educational and informational forums on g/l/b issues with respect to politics, literature, the media and other interesting topics. Upcoming BGLS meetings will be: Sunday, Apr 2, Union 208, 7-8 pm Sunday, Apr 30, Union 205, 7-8 pm. All people interested in being a part of BGLS can call Heather at 539-7619, Shel at 537-3889, or Lob at 537-2396. ================================================== GREG LOUGANIS AND OTHERS TO SPEAK AT KU by KU's LesBiGaySOK Organization KU's LesBiGay Awareness Week 1995 (April 2-8) features so e very impressive speakers. CALL VICTOR 539-5307 FOR DIRECTIONS. =============================== ================================================ HOCHHAUSER TO SPEAK AT ALLIANCE MEETING Sheila Hochhauser, Manhattan's State Representative, will speak at the April Flint Hills Alliance meeting. Because of Sheila's scheduling conflicts (Congress might be in session on both first Thursdays of April and Hay), the Flint Hills Alliance meeting for April will be Thursday, April 13, 7:30 pm, at the First Congregational Church (Poyntz and Juliette). Sheila has been a long-time supporter of gay and lesbian issues. Her discussion in April will be on current affairs in the Kansas Congress with respect to gays and lesbians. Among other issues, Sheila will discuss the KS House Bill 2301 which, if passed, will limit sex education to "heterosexual marriage." HB2301 leaves out any discussion of AIDS. Please plan to attend. ============================================= SHE SPEAKS.... by Deb Taylor, editor Almost everyday on the Internet, I read about another place of business discriminating against gays and lesbians. Two weeks ago, a customer was asked by management to leave an International House of Pancakes restaurant in Texas because the customer was talking quietly to someone about being a gay man. This story was reported by a gay police officer who happened to witness the event and who refused to throw out the customer when management requested it. More recently, the higher-ups at Kentucky Fried Chicken have told its middle management to not hire any employees who look like they might be gay or lesbian. Domino's Pizza is under fire for homosexual discrimination. Cracker Barrel Restaurants and Coors have been under fire for a long time. The Family Channel (31) is owned by Pat Robertson of the radical Christian right. As consumers who spend money, we should think more wisely when we sink our dollars into these businesses. businesses like AT&T, Nike, Evian, Calvin Klein, Benetton, and Bailey's deserve our ùmoney. In Manhattan, both Espresso Royale and Subway have sexual orientation included in their nondiscrimination policies. Look at who advertises in our g/l/b magazines and find out which businesses support same-sex lifestyles. Support them through your money. Remember, they are probably under fire already for supporting an "unpopular" lifestyle. With all of the competition in today's business world, we can afford to support those who support us. ====================================================== MANHATTAN HAPPENINGS VICKEY COORDINATES FHA PHONE LIST The growing list of g/l/b's in Manhattan who want to be kept updated on FHA events has prompted the need for a phone list coordinator. Monique has owned Revolutions, located at 902 W. 7th in Junction City, for two years. "Family Night," which is for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals only, has been going on for about one year. In fact, Revolutions celebrated its one-year "family" anniversary on February 18 of this year. Monique was approached over a year ago by a Flint Hills Alliance member who wanted to have a private function for g/l/b's at Revolutions. Monique honored his request and, shortly after the event, a gay man from Junction City approached Monique about the possibility of a family night once a week. The request blossomed into the current regular family nights, which are every Thursday and the first and third Saturdays of every month. Monique's business improved 80% on these nights. Says Monique, "sometimes family night are better" than the regular evenings. Monique states that the Junction City community knows about family night at Revolutions, and she feels they have either accepted it or don't care because her bar patrons have never been hassled. Revolutions has a good reputation: the police never have to come to break up fights, and no one has ever been harassed in the parking lot. Monique was initially skeptical about having a gay bar in Junction City; she felt that JC was not ready for it. But she felt that the gay/lesbian market in this area was wide open and decided, "Why not?" Having grown up in New York City, Monique has always accepted homosexuality and bisexuality as normal lifestyles. She wanted to offer a place in town where same-sex partners could have fun in a safe environment. Monique's family helps her run Revolutions. Her brother likes playing to the g/l/b crowd because he enjoys playing techno music, a favorite of gay men. Monique's husband also enjoys the g/l/b clientele. He enjoys the openness and straightforwardness of the g/l/b community. In an effort to say "thanks" to the community for supporting her business, Monique sponsored an AIDS benefit on February 23. Monique believes that AIDS is a sad situation, and it's even worse that narrow-minded people say "this is what you get for being who you are." To Monique, AIDS has no color, race, or sexual preference. The AIDS benefit brought in $80, which will be given to the Manhattan AIDS Project. Monique hopes to have an even bigger benefit next year. Revolutions plays a mix of techno, house, R&B, country, and slow dance music. Monique encourages g/l/b's from Manhattan, JC, and the surrounding areas to spend a fun-and safe--evening at Revolutions. ===================================================== ====================== STREETSIDE RECORDS 1231 MORO - AGGIEVILLE *FREE SPECIAL ORDERS AVAILABLE - 776.7373 *DANCE MUSIC, JAZZ WIMMIN'S MUSIC, FOLK, CLASSICAL ====================== ====================================================== NOTABLE QUOTES "Thank you very much for your expression of support after the anti-gay ('Barney Fag') comment made by Congressman Armey. . . The point I tried hardest to make was that while I as a member of Congress a- relatively protected against the negative consequences of this sort of thing, there are millions of lesbians and gay men in the rest of the country--and indeed the world--who have much less protection and it is on their behalf that I and others have tried to use this incident to show the harm that prejudice can do." --U.S. Rep. It is--and I say this without qualification or hesitation--the single most pernicious force in America today. The pursuit of otherness, the sense that we are somehow different than our brothers and sisters, no matter where we find them, allows for all the other great evils: racism, sexism, homophobia, violence against gay people and against women." --Syndicated New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen to the Gay Men's Health Crisis President's Lunch ======================================================= ======================================================= SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN THE U.S. LIKELY IN NEAR FUTURE Compiled from Internet Reports MARRIAGE IS COMING: CAN WE HANDLE IT? All signs indicate that the State of Hawaii may grant gay and lesbian couples the right to legally marry in the near future The decision of the Hawaii courts will likely give same-sex couples the identical rights and benefits of married heterosexual couples. The question before us now: is the gay and lesbian community organized enough to keep this fundamental right once granted? NGLTF, working in conjunction with national and local organizations, is distributing a Marriage Resolution This organizing tool is an excellent catalyst to spur discussion on the issues same-sex marriage raises and is an opportunity for your organization, whether g/l/b/t focused or not, to publicly endorse our community's right to legally marry. ACTION: 1) Request the Marriage Resolution organizing tool and talking points by calling NGLTF at (202) 332.6483. 2) Convene a meeting of local organizers to discuss and endorse the Resolution and to create a plan for education and action. 3) If you are a member of a same-sex couple hurt by the denial of marriage rights or if you are a clergy member who supports our right to marry, please contact NGLTF (ext 3215). AHH, KANSAS House Bill 2301 is an indirect assault on same-sex marriage The bill states that pupils will be taught "honor and respect for monogamous marriage," and that homosexual activities are unlawful. STUNNING VICTORY IN SOUTH DAKOTA A bill that would have banned same-sex marriages has been defeated in the SD state legislature Sponsors of the bill failed to secure enough votes to bring the measure to a vote. Gay and lesbian activists believe that one deciding factor in the bill's defeat may have been lawyers' concern of a tourist and business boycott of the state should the bill pass . South Dakota's Mount Rushmore and Black Hills area draw tens of thousands of tourists annually. TROUBLE IN ALASKA On Friday, March 3, Republican legislators in the Alaska State Legislature introduced two bills one to prevent domestic partnership benefits from being made available to state and university employees and the other to prohibit same-sex marriage These bills (numbered 226 and 227 respectively) were introduced in response to a case that was recently sent to the Alaska Supreme Court in which two same-sex couples at the University of Alaska Fairbanks were granted health benefits for their domestic partners. UTAH NOT SO LUCKY The ban on recognizing same-sex marriages legalized in other states passed on March 2 with just one minute to go in the session between 10 pm and midnight the bill was quickly rushed out of the House rules committee, voted on in the House, sent to Senate rules, brought to the Senate floor and voted on there. On banning same-sex marriages, the House vote was 62 to 1 with 12 absent According to gay and lesbian activists, all or most of the gay-friendlies on the hill are Democrats who are heavily outgunned and a gay vote on this bill might have cost so e of them their seats in the legislature Even so, their votes would not have kept the bill from passing. Utah's g/l/b/t activists' next possible course of action includes a campaign to keep the winter Olympics out of Utah, which will probably be called Olympics Out of Utah, a takeoff on the name of the successful Olympics Out of Cobb County effort in Georgia A theme for the campaign may be "The World isn't Welcome Here" because the theme of the Utah Olympic Bid Committee is "The World is Welcome Here." ======================================================= THEN. . . AI is particularly concerned that sections of the Kansas and Missouri Criminal code provide imprisonment for individuals who engage in homosexual acts between consenting adults Provisions of KSA 1993 Supp Section 21-3505 (a)(l), "The Criminal Sodomy Law," provide for up to 6 months in jail for Sodomy between persons of the same sex, with sodomy defined as oral or anal copulation or oral contact with genitalia. It should be pointed out that the inclusion of genitalia is a break from the general rule where lesbianism is usually not mentioned in Anglo-Saxon law. If an adult in Kansas or Missouri were to be imprisoned solely for private, consensual, homosexual acts, Amnesty International would consider that individual to be a prisoner of conscience. AI NEEDS KANSAS FOLKS TO GET INVOLVED! Individuals, groups - queer and non, and local AI groups are needed to work intensively in repealing these laws. It is important that we begin by working within the State building networks and support systems to fight these laws. To receive a packet of AI materials detailing how people can help work against the sodomy laws in Kansas, please write AIMLGC-AIUSA 53 West Jackson Street " 1162, Chicago, IL 60604 email aimlgc@igc.apc.org Tel> 202-546-8794 ========================================================= STATES WHERE "SODOMY" IS PROHIBITED ONLY BETWEEN PEOPLE OF THE SAME SEX Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee (Tennessee's law is currently being challenged in court Three other states--Kentucky, Nevada, and Texas--were initially on this list but their sodomy laws were struck down in state courts ) STATES WHERE "SODOMY" IS PROHIBITED BETWEEN PEOPLE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AND SAME SEX Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia *All other states have no sodomy laws THE TOP TEN OFFENSES Idaho--LIFE Georgia--20 years Rhode Island--20 years Virginia--20 years Michigan--15 years Maryland--10 years Mississippi--10 years Montana--10 years North Carolina--10 years Oklahoma--10 years ================================== S o d o m y L a w H i s t o r y Prior to the early 1950's, most states had laws which criminalized consensual sodomy between heterosexuals and homosexuals. In the mid 1950's, the American Law Institute (ALI) developed a "Model Penal Code" to update and unify American criminal law. In 50 doing, the code decriminalized sexual behavior, including homosexual conduct, between consenting adults in private. The Model Code concluded that criminal law cannot encompass all behavior that the average citizen may regard as immoral or deviate It therefore stated that society and the law should give all consenting adults freedom of choice and action in matters of private morality. In 1961, Illinois became the first state to repeal its sodomy law; it did so by adopting the Model Penal Code. Connecticut followed in '71 To date, thirty states have repealed their sodomy laws (or they have been struck down by state courts). In the late 1970's, a countertrend began, in which any states decided to "specify" instead of repeal its sodomy laws. Since 1973, eight states have a ended their laws to specify that oral or anal sex is prohibited ONLY between persons of the same sex and not between opposite sex partners. The trend to single out homosexual acts as crimes began around the same time as two very critical events: The American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases; and The U.S. Civil Service Commission forbade supervisors from denying people federal government jobs based solely on homosexuality. ======================================================== =================================================== GAY MINISTER SPEAKS WITH PAT ROBERTSON, ENDS FAST by the Associated Press VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A jailed gay minister who was fasting to get a meeting with Pat Robertson got his wish Wednesday (3/8) when the religious broadcaster stopped by to discuss homosexuality and drop trespassing charges. Mel White, a former ghostwriter for Robertson, was released less than an hour after the nighttime meeting, officials said. He was arrested Feb. 15 after refusing to leave Christian Broadcasting Network property. White had told his supporters not to post the S1,000 bond. The minister had been fasting for more than three weeks to pressure Robertson into the meeting. He believes Robertson's views fuel intolerance against gays. During the meeting, Robertson said he condemned violence against gays and rejected White's views that his comments cause the violence. He also restated his belief that homosexuality is biblically wrong. "I have never preached hate ... against homosexuals) as you allege, and the charges that people were injured by violence incited by anything said by me are baseless," Robertson said in a letter he gave White. CBN officials had called the fast and voluntary jail stint a "desperate media campaign." White was a ghostwriter for a Robertson book in 1986. He said he acknowledged his homosexuality in 1991, the year all ties with Robertson were severed. White is a leader in the Los Angeles-based Metropolitan Community Church, a 32,000-member Christian denomination for gays. Pat Robertson, Ends Fast ANTI-GAY/LESBIAN COMMENTS MADE BY PAT ROBERTSON IN RECENT YEARS -g/l/bs are a threat to the nation's future; -g/l/bs undermine the values on which America was founded; -when g/l/bs are tolerated, it causes God's wrath as in the California earthquakes and the Mississippi floods; -lesbians recruit young heterosexual wo-en because lesbians hate motherhood; -gays and lesbians have an agenda to destroy the American family. ================================================ ========================================================= RJ PARWATKAR BAKES THE BEST CHEESECAKE IN MANHATTAN! In one study, some of the long-term survivors appear to have developed antibodies against the virus, while others have elevated levels of specialized cells that battle HIV. Still others are infected by unusually weakened strains of the virus. Another study provides evidence that using weakened strains of the HIV virus rather than dead ones might provide clues to a vaccine. AT&T CRITICIZED BY CHRISTIANS Dr. James Dobson of the radical Christian group, Focus on the Family, is encouraging his radio listeners to call AT&T to protest its support for homosexuals. AT&T offers g/l/b workshops for its employees and it advertised heavily in the Gay Games. If you want to thank AT&T for its sensitivity to g/l/b issues, please call them at 908-221-4191 (during M-F business hours). COURT TO DECIDE GAYS' CIVIL RIGHTS The Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether or not states can forbid laws designed to protect homosexuals from discrimination. The court will review Colorado's constitutional amendment--which voters approved in 1992--that would cancel local (city) laws protecting gays and lesbians from bias in employment, housing, and public accommodations. State courts struck down the 1992 Colorado amendment because it denied homosexuals an equal voice in government. In a clumsy effort to purge sexual expression from the Internet and other online networks, the self-described "Communications Decency Act of 1995" (S.314, introduced by Senator Exon on 2/2/95) would make ALL telecommunications service providers liable for every message, file, or other content carried on their networks Senator. Exon is planning to attach the bill to Senator Pressler's new telecommunications legislation, which is targeted for action in early March. The Exon proposal would severely restrict the flow of online information by requiring service providers to act as private censors of e-mail messages, public forums, mailing lists, and archives to avoid criminal liability The ACLU believes that online users should be the only censors of the content of the information they receive. The Exon proposal broadens existing law by subjecting service providers, as well as the individuals who actually send messages, to criminal liability for any "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, or indecent" message transmitted over their networks If enacted into law, this vague and overly broad legislation could have the following draconian effects YOUR E-MAIL MESSAGES MIGHT BE READ The Exon proposal would prohibit communications with sexual content through private email between consenting adults, and would inhibit people from sending comments that might or might not be prohibited. Under the Exon proposal, service providers would pay up to $100,000 or spend up to 2 years in jail for prohibited content produced by subscribers on other networks, over which they had no control. The Exon proposal would expand current restrictions on telephone access by minors to dial-a-porn services to include online access to indecent material, requiring service providers to purge "indecent" material from public bulletin boards and discussion groups to avoid accidental viewing by a minor. In effect, online providers would be forced to offer to adults only that content that is "suitable for minors." The ACLU opposes the restrictions on speech imposed by this legislation because they violate the First Amendment's guarantee of free expression Forcing carriers to pre-screen content violates the Constitution and threatens the free and robust expression that is the promise of the Net. The Constitution requires that any abridgement of speech use the least restrictive means available; the language of the Exon proposal is clearly the most restrictive because it sweeps broadly against a wide array of protected material involving sexual expression. Stop the information superhighway from becoming the most censored segment of communications media! ACT NOW: Urge members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation: * To oppose the Exon proposal, or any Senate or House variation * To drop the Exon proposal BEFORE it goes to the Senate floor * To hold full hearings on the Exon proposal and to review it thoroughly before it goes to the Senate floor * To reject any effort to attach the Exon proposal to the Senate telecommunications legislation. These candidates were selected based on their experiences in education as well as their sensitivity to diversity. These candidates support: separation of church and state; sex education which includes discussion of AIDS; NO prayer in schools; and tolerance for different lifestyles. Flint Hills Observer readers are encouraged to vote for school board candidates on April 4. This election is particularly important, even to those who nay not have children in school, because a few of the candidates, particularly Hampton (and to some degree Pearson), have expressed ideas which indicate to the Observer that they oppose all discussion of diversity in education. Their views are not at all in alignment with the interests of FHO readers. Putting religious extremists on the school board will give them a foot in the door and enable them to spread their agenda, which opposes Multiculturalism and supports school prayer and book banning. In the primaries, Hill, Nuss, Weaver, and Nichols received the most votes. But recent discussion suggests that a few of the other candidates are gaining ground. Readers can register to vote until March 20. Please vote on April 4. NO CLEAR CANDIDATE FOR COMMISSION The Flint Hills Observer has no formal endorsement to make for the city commissioners. In a recent newsletter fro- the Manhattan Alliance on Peace and Justice (3/95), the MAPJ board agreed that Bruce Snead stands out as the candidate who is "most sensitive to environmental issues and grassroots neighborhood concerns." Snead currently works for the Engineering Extension at KSU as a state extension specialist in residential energy. He is also the chairperson of the Education Division of the American Solar Energy Society. Snead states that he has "advocated energy conservation and the use of renewable energy for many years, both nationally and here in Kansas."
