Mayor Stunkel, who was originally slated to speak, has had to reschedule for November because of a last-minute City Commission meeting. The speakers for this Thursday are Manhattan School Board Members Deb Nuss and Larry Weaver, and Manhattan High School teacher Gayle Bennett. They plan to speak on the Radical Christian Right's (RCR) role in the most recent school board elections, as well as the RCR's impact on Manhattan. These three were well-informed on (and/or very involved in) the debate on sex education in Manhattan schools around two years ago. They are also gay/lesb friendly and support inclusion. The Radical Christian Right and conservative groups are working very hard to push their agenda onto Manhattan. Their biggest point of entry right now centers on the school system. But do not think that this meeting is exclusively for people who have children; the Radical Right's plans to push its agenda onto K-12 education is merely a starting place. Deb, Larry, and Gayle are good resources to show how the RCR works and how they plan to enter other "arenas" in Manhattan. Please plan to come. Deb, Larry, and Gayle hope to exchange ideas with a large group of concerned gays and lesbians. This is your chance to network with people who can help impact Manhattan by sharing our feelings and thoughts with other influential people. (I might also add that poor attendance tells our speakers that we are a very apathetic group--let's help to avoid THAT message). :) If you have further questions, please write me at dtaylor@ksu.edu. Sincerely, Deb Taylor Acting Vice-President Flint Hills Alliance PS After the meeting, for those who would like to stay, we will: 1. give away the $50 gift coin from Streetside (it's not too late to purchase a chance!); 2. hold elections for Flint Hills Alliance officers; 3. vote to decrease FHA membership dues to $10 per person (or to keep them at the current rate of $20).
