The proposed ordinance adds "sexual orientation" to the list of protected classes in the city's human rights ordinance. On April 18 the commission set the rules for hearing testimony on the ordinance promoted by Simply Equal, a coalition of more than 1,000 people. Simply Equal first proposed the ordinance last November. On April 25, at News-Telegraph press time, the commission was expected to vote on a draft copy of the ordinance. The April 4 general election is believed to have provided Simply Equal with enough votes for the ordinance to pass. If that happens, Lawrence will be the first community in Kansas to protect Gays and Lesbians from discrimination in housing, public accommodations and employment. ========================================================== Permission granted by the News-Telegraph for distribution to the KQN email list (KQN@casti.com), and archiving in the Queer Resources Directory (QRD) on the Internet (http://www.qrd.org/QRD).
