FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: PHYLLIS WISNESKI NOVEMBER 5, 1992 316-684-4227 Equality Kansas Organization Meeting Salina, KS (EGCM) A state-wide coalition of organizations and individuals promoting human rights will meet in Salina, Kansas this Saturday, November 6 to bring together their plans and actions in fighting the upcoming legislative resolution against gay and lesbian civil rights. The final hour of the meeting will be open to the public for a Town Meeting panel discussion to be taped for later airing on public access cable television. The Equality Kansas Coalition was formed to counter the mounting attack by the Religious Far Right in Kansas, which will surface during the legislative session beginning this January. A resolution and several Colorado "Amendment-2" type propositions have been written, as well as possible bills related to the issue, spearheaded by Darlene Cornfield of Valley Center. "By stating that gays and lesbians have no right to protection from discrimination or hatred, their right to legal protection from violence, loss of jobs or housing, loss of our right to exist will eventually be taken away," said Doug Glaze of Wichita. "When our country allows the rights of one group of citizens to be taken away, it sets a dangerous precedence leaving any group such as racial, religious or ethnic minorities at risk for similar actions." The business part of the meeting will begin with registration at 9:30 am and last until 3:30 pm. Lunch will be available. The panel discussion will start at 4:00 pm with panelists Beverly Barbo, author of the "Walking Wounded" about people with AIDS; George Pyle, editor of the Salina Journal; Peg Jarman, a lobbyist and activist for the Pro-Choice Action League and Dr. Don Miller of Topeka who will talk about the Fred Phelps Cult. "It is important that people become aware of a wide agenda by the Far Right," said Phyllis Wisneski, one of the Equality Kansas organizers. "They do not want to be equal; they want a nation run by them, reflecting their narrow religious doctrines and schools that teach only their dogma. They want to control the media, the legal system and the government. Their panel will try to achieve the goal of linking together and exposing the danger posed to the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights."
