FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Rex Rivers 316-269-0913 or November 17, 1993 Phyllis Wisneski 316-684-4227 PRO-DISCRIMINATION AMENDMENT ENJOINED BY US DISTRICT COURT Wichita, KS (=KS) US District Judge Arthur Spiegel has enjoined the city of Cincinnati from a city charter amendment that would have prohibited anti-discrimination protection for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals and to prevent any such legislation from being considered in the future. The amendment, called Issue 3, was sponsored by a far right wing organization called Equal Rights Not Special Rights. "We are delighted to hear that the religious right wing has once again been defeated in their efforts to spread lies," said Rex Rivers of Equality Kansas. "Even their name is a lie. Gay men, lesbians and bisexuals are not asking for any kind of special rights, we simply want what everyone else already has; things like the ability to hold a job, to eat at a restaurant, buy a home, et cetera without discrimination." A Kansas referendum similar to Issue 3, sponsored by Representative Darlene Cornfield of Valley Center, will be brought before the legislature during the next session. Equality Kansas is a coalition of groups and individuals formed to oppose such pro-discrimination measures from passing in the state and to keep the public informed about the encroachment of the religious right wing into politics.
