TALKING POINTS FOR DEBATING THE CORNFIELD RESOLUTION 1. "The Bible Says Homosexuality is Wrong". Or, "I don't agree with homosexuality on a moral basis." ANSWER: This resolution is not about whether or not you agree with homosexuality. It is about making certain that homosexuals have no protections. We are fortunate to live in a country where we do not have to agree with the beliefs of our neighbors. Many of the founding parents of the United States left their native countries because they could no longer tolerate the religious tyrrany of the government in their homeland. If we do not allow others their individuality, at some point anything we do that does not follow the religious beliefs of whoever is in power may become illegal. The Bible states that women should be subservient to men in all ways, and that eating pork is a sin. Should these become illegal? 2. "But what about the children? I've heard that homosexuals recruit them." ANSWER: This resolution is not about whether or not homosexuals should have the right to recruit children. It is about making sure that homosexuals do not have any protection. However, homosexuals do not recruit children. If children are in a class with a homosexual teacher, the children will not somehow be "infected" and become a homosexual. If you could become whatever your teacher is, the Catholic Church would not be having problem finding women who are willing to become nuns. Along that same vein, studies have proven that the vast majority of children raised by homosexual parents are heterosexual. If sexuality was determined by the sexuality of your parents, there would be no such thing as homosexuality. 3. "But I have heard stories about homosexuals molesting children." ANSWER: This resolution is not about homosexuals molesting children. It is about making certain homosexuals have no protection. I have also heard stories about homosexuals molesting children. It's appalling. Anyone who molests a child should be punished. However, most children who are molested, according to statistics, are molested by heterosexuals. Child molestation is a very serious problem, but it really has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the person who is doing the molesting. 4. "I am against special rights for any group of people, regardless." ANSWER: So am I. This resolution is about the special right certain religious zealots think they have -- the special right to discriminate against those they hate. It really bothers me that certain people, because of religious beliefs, are starting to get some very special rights. Homosexuals aren't even asking for special rights, but you wouldn't know it from what these religious zealots are saying. Actually, right now, homosexuals don't even have equal rights. Did you know that homosexuals don't have the right to housing? Or to having and raising children? Or the right to walk down the street and not get attacked? Homosexuals don't even have equal rights under the law. What the religious zealots are trying to do is to make sure that they never have these equal rights. And when they get done with the homosexuals, they will move on to Catholics, Jews, women, and everyone else who isn't exactly like them. 5. "This resolution isn't about special rights for homosexuals?" ANSWER: No, it's not. It's about making certain that homosexuals do not have any protections. No one should have any special rights. But everyone should enjoy the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That is exactly what religious zealots hope to take away. Today they're going after homosexuals. Tomorrow, it could be you. Please let your state legislator know how you feel about this resolution.
