Barnett TOPEKA-Members and supporters of Equality Kansas are being urged to contact state senators who are considered 'moderate' on many social issues, though not necessarily friendly towards Lesbian and Gay concerns. "We would like EKS members and EKS network supporters to write or call these senators in an attempt to make them so," said Doug Glaze, EKS co-director. "We're asking supporters to contact these senators and express their concerns over the (Kansas) House of Representative's attempts to push divisive 'social issues' over, and to the exclusion of other pressing issues that deserve their attention." Theocratic conservatives have taken over the state's Republican party and ousted the party's moderate leadership in the House after last November's election, replacing it with their own. Activists fear a new wave of anti-Gay and Lesbian legislation will be proposed and possibly passed in the House. They hope to stave off the attack by focusing in the Senate. Equality Kansas was formed last year to respond to anti-Gay legislation proposed by Representative Darlene Cornfield and others. "It's also important that as many people as possible come out to them as being openly Lesbian or Gay. Many of these senators have expressed to various people that they have rarely or never been contacted by Lesbian or Gay constituents," Glaze said. EKS' list of senators to be contacted includes: Dick Bond, David Corbin, Rip Gooch, Christine Downey, Paul Feliciano Jr., Anthony Hensley, Sherman Jones, Jerry Karr, Dave Kerr, Audrey Longworthy, Lana Oleen, Mark Parkenson, Marge Petty Sandy Praeger, Pat Ransom, Richard Rock, Alicia Salisbury, Carolyn Tillotson, Bob Vancrum, Doug Walker, Bill Wisdon, and Lillian Papay. Glaze emphasized that the list is meant to serve only as a guideline to assist supporters in contacting their representatives in the most effective way possible, and is not intended to be comprehensive, nor an endorsement by EKS. Kansas senators can be contacted c/o State Capitol, Topeka KS 66612. Phone numbers can be obtained by calling 913/296-7300. ========================================================== Permission granted by the News-Telegraph for distribution to the EKS email list (equalityks@qiclab.scn.rain.com), and archiving in the Queer Resources Directory (QRD) on the Internet (http://www.qrd.org/QRD).
