Once again, there is a bill pending to add sexual orientation to a non-discrimination law in the State of Illinois. There are two identical bills, HB-2182 which already passed the House, and SB-1823 which has not yet passed the Senate. Every year, Sen. James "Pate" Philip kills it by keeping it stuck in the Senate Rules Committee. ONLY ONE MORE VOTE IS NEEDED to make it out of Rules. That will be 3 out of the 5 sub-committee members recommending it for passage. Once out of Rules, the Senate Executive Committee will basically "rubber stamp" it, and it will go to the full IL Senate for vote. I believe the 30 votes necessary for it to pass the Senate are there. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the Illinois Education Assn. are endorsing the bill, and Governor Jim Edgar (R) said he'd sign it. Here are the 3 senators that are blocking the bill. Any one of them changing their mind will help move the bill along to the next step in the process. It can pass this year. The deadline is the end of THIS WEEK, April 1, 1994. Call now. You do NOT need to live in their district to call. Urge them to SUPPORT S.B. 1823.
