Date: Thu, 20 Mar 97 11:35:23 HST From: ramsey@math.hawaii.edu (Tom Ramsey) Subject: HAWAII MARCH 20 A NEW CATHOLIC-BASED POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE FORMS TO OPPOSE SAME-GENDER MARRIAGE THEY ALSO OPPOSE RAMPANT PROMISCUITY, ABORTION AND EUTHANASIA A group of Star of the Sea parishioners, Roman Catholic, has formed a new political action group to oppose same-gender marriage. Their organizing call-to-action is appended below. Just curious: how do you like being lumped together with rampant promiscuity, abortion and euthanasia as threats to the family? Please think of the ceaseless campaign to turn Hawaii into a theocratic state. To fight these people in court, consider a tax-deductible contribution to Marriage Project-Hawaii PO Box 11690 Honolulu, HI 96828 The state of Hawaii has hired a mainland homophobe for $75,000 to fight us in the final appeal to Hawaii's Supreme Court. Our team is funded only by contributions, not tax dollars. Marriage Project-Hawaii is the only organization paying the fees of attorney Dan Foley. Marriage Project-Hawaii also has a lobbying organization which receives non- tax-deductible contributions, Friends of h.e.r.m.p (same PO Box as above). Friends of h.e.r.m.p has a 900 number, 1-900-97-MARRY for contributions billed to one's phone number (limit: $25, must 18+). Matsumoto, Daniel P. McGivern March 1997 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pro-Family Hawaii has been established by the individuals listed above to support and strengthen traditional family life in Hawaii and oppose that which threatens or weakens the family. While it is an independent organization, its spiritual base stems from the concern of Star of the Sea parishioners to what is happening to the family, and the legacy we will leave our children, grand children and succeeding generations. Some of the threats to happy, healthy, families currently include: rampant promiscuity, abortion, euthanasia and the effort to legalize same sex marriage relationships in a formal marriage state. Hawaii was the first state to legalize abortion and is currently poised to be the first to legalize same sex marriage, even though more than 70 percent of our people are opposed to doing this. Those who support making same sex relationships equal to marriage between a man and a woman largely base their argument on the freedom of individuals to choose their own life style, as if doing so would not have negative moral and economic effects on the community and, in particular, the family, the basic unit of community. While individual freedom should be respected, governments have consistently placed restrictions on individual rights where they negatively affect the safety and welfare of the community. Individual rights run amok can cause great harm to other individuals and, in particular, to families. There has to be a balance between individual rights and community rights. We cannot just sit back and allow a few to impose their morals on us. What we have determined is that there is a great need for grass roots activity, the kind of activity that politicians and government officials understand. Direct mailings to voters, advertising, stew and rice rallies in a politician's district, telephone committees, writing campaigns and petitions all take time, effort and money. We will support politicians, regardless of party, who have a high moral vision of family life in Hawaii and oppose those who do not. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Pro-Family Hawaii I implore your help--not for us, but for all our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to live in the kind of Hawaii-nei that will give them the opportunity to live moral, happy, healthy lives. Our patron in this work is the Holy Family of Nazareth. Please pray, search your heart and mind and open up your checkbook. For those of you who can, we ask for a substantial contribution. Please make out your check to "Pro-Family Hawaii" and send it to the above address in the enclosed envelope. We also need your expertise and your energy. If you would also like to help with the work of Pro-Family Hawaii, please include a note with your name, address, zip code and telephone number. All the best through the Blessed Virgin Mary, Rev.
