Date: Mon, 13 May 96 10:54:06 HST From: ramsey@math.hawaii.edu (Tom Ramsey) Subject: HAWAII MAY 13 HAWAII'S FUTURE TODAY WILL SEND LEGISLATOR TERRANCE TOM TO TESTIFY TO CONGRESS The following stories are unconfirmed, but probably reliable: a) NBC Dateline will have a same gender marriage story Friday night (always take this with a grain of salt---a forest fire in Yellowstone Park can bump the story) b) Senator Al d'Amato of New York, Republican and head of the Dole re-election campaign, is against the bill in Congress to limit same gender marriage rights. This story is especially odd, since Dole has endorsed the same bill. c) Hawaii's Future Today will send Terrance Tom to Congress to testify in favor of the new bill in Congress to limit same gender marriage rights; Terrance Tom is Chair of the Judiciary Committee in Hawaii's House of Representatives The following has been rumored for weeks in Hawaii, and was confirmed last week: the Circuit Court hearing of Baehr v. Miike will be postponed from August 1 to September 10. The Deputy Attorney General Stephen Michaels (spelling?), who once handled the case, has resigned from the attorney general's office. The state asked for the delay so that the new attorney assigned to the case can come up to speed. h.e.r.m.p supporters have formed a new association, Friends of h.e.r.m.p, a non-profit corporation to do the public advocacy work for marriage which a tax-deductible organization like h.e.r.m.p cannot do. Their address is Friends of h.e.r.m.p PO BOX 11690 Honolulu, HI 96828. Donations to Friends of h.e.r.m.p are NOT tax deductible, due to the political nature of their work. Lewin (Foley is the attorney who makes all court appearances on behalf of the plaintiff couples). Please be generous in support of HERMP; Hawaii is a small state, and the tiny gay and lesbian community here is very active in advocacy work which HERMP cannot address. Donations to HERMP are fully tax-deductible, and should be made out to GLCC-HERMP 1521 Alexander Street, #503 Honolulu, HI 96822. The HERMP branch in Kona, on the Big Island, has produced a T-shirt for sale. One can send a check for $17.50 to HERMP, P.O.Box 902, Captain Cook, HI 96704, together with a note about being sent a T-shirt (S, M, L, XL, XXL). It is also available in a tank top. The design is multi-color on white. A large triangle points down, with the letters h.e.r.m.p above the triangle, some male-male, female-female symbols in the border of the triangle and some palm trees. To place an email order for T-shirts, or to obtain more information, please email skippero@aol.com. An image of the T-shirt is available via the WEB on http://www.qrd.org/QRD/www/usa/maine/hawaii-tee.html
