Date: Fri, 14 Jul 1995 09:05:18 -1000 From: Mia H H Lam Subject: Baehr v. Lewin (fwd) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 13 Jul 1995 16:56:27 -1000 From: MR ROBERT J MORRIS To: marriage@abacus.oxy.edu, q-saints@vector.casti.com Subject: Baehr v. Lewin On Thursday afternoon at 3:30 Honolulu time, I attended with Dan Foley the hearing on our Attorney General's motion to revise the Supreme Court's mandate and to continue the trial date. The Court refused to amend the mandate (it remains to require the state to show a compelling state interest), but the Court GRANTED the motion for a continuance. The new Trial date is JULY 15, 1996--exactly one year from now. That year is going to be, shall I say, hell on wheels. The Commission on Same-sex Orientation will (supposedly) meet and come up with some kind of report prior to January 1996. In mid- January 1996, our Legislature will convene. We expect that this will again be a frantic political period. Then trial will commence July 15. Assuming the trial takes several weeks, that will take us to August or September 1996. Two months later IS THE NATIONAL ELECTION. Hence, we all need to get our ducks in line now, meaning that if you have research to publish, DO IT. If you have writing to write, coalitions to organize, lobbying to move, volunteers to find, DO IT NOW. We are especially in need of solid, up-to-date research on all areas affecting same-sex marriage, but especially the procreation, fostering, adopting, rearing of children, plus the origins and causes of homosexuality. We need to move this all forward with ALL DELIBERATE SPEED. I will be a clearinghouse and point of contact for any information you may wish to share. Tom Ramsey of HERMP is, of course, the major contact there. I urge everyone to be a DOER of the word and not a HEARER only. In other words, if you know of good information, please don't write and tell me where I can find it. Please find it yourself, get a copy, and send it to me. Today's courtroom was largely empty. The judge, his clerks and the reporter, the news media, and the attorneys, were the only people present EXCEPT FOR THE THREE MORMONS (ONE OF WHOM WAS THEIR ATTORNEY ON THEIR INTERVENTION). They continue to take an intense interest in all of this. I hope all of this information is useful and relevant to all of you. If I can answer questions, please ask. But above all, please make this your priority and realize how fast the coming year will go. ******************************************************************************* To send a message to the entire list "marriage", email marriage@abacus.oxy.edu To contact the List Manager, email marriage-owner@abacus.oxy.edu. *******************************************************************************
