Date: Tue, 28 Mar 95 11:39:03 HST From: ramsey@math.hawaii.edu HAWAII, MARCH 28 JUDGE DENIES MORMON REQUEST TO BE CO-DEFENDANT WITH THE STATE OF HAWAII Judge Herbert K. Shimabukuro, motions judge for Honolulu's Circuit Court, has denied the request of the Mormon Church to be co-defendant with the state in the BAEHR V. LEWIN case. In Baehr v. Lewin, the state is scheduled on September 25 to present compelling state interests for continuing to deny marriage licenses to same-gender couples. The Mormon Church may not trust the State of Hawaii to fight HERMP vigorously enough in court. HERMP expects the Mormon Church to appeal Judge Shimabukuro's decision. Governor Cayetano is meeting Wednesday, March 29, with a small delegation concerning the recently passes SB 888 (which the governor is expected to sign).
