Date: Wed, 15 Mar 1995 15:26:05 -1000 From: Frank Cipriano HERMP, WED. MAR 15 SB 888 (to create another commission to study sexual orientation and the law) will probably have 2nd reading today in the House and 3rd (and final) reading tomorrow, according to the committee clerk of the House Judiciary Committee. It passed the Senate 24-1 and should pass the House by a similar margin. This is the "duck and hide" bill, with the possible benefit of building a public perception of the need for domestic partnership/marriage rights. Dan Foley is in court this morning, arguing against the Mormon effort to join the state as co-plaintiff in the District Court proceedings concerning compelling state interests. Steven Michaels, the state's attorney for this case, is also opposed to the intervention of the Mormons in the case. The GLCC Art Auction will take place this Saturday at the Alana Hotel in Waikiki, 6:00 pm (champagne and a great pupu spread). $50 per person. This year the focus is on the art auction: no entertainment and no speeches. Right now, about 60 people have bought tickets. For people who might buy art, this may be a great opportunity: relatively few buyers in a year of a fairly weak Hawaiian economy. If you know any such people, please spread the word quickly---RSVP's are needed by Thursday at the absolute latest. HERMP is having its regular steering committee tonight, 5pm to 7pm, at the GLCC (1820 University Ave.). Anyone is welcome to attend. KRON-TV of San Francisco is in Honolulu this week, filming a special on the marriage project. They may play a very important role in educating a major gay market. Right now, many mainlanders believe that the marriage case is dead due to Terrance Tom's baby-making bill in the 1994 legislature; slowly, that perception is being changed. Tina Vauxhall of the L.A. Times is doing a major article on the marriage project. Peter Freiburg of the Washington Blade is tracking the course of SB 888 closely, and reporting on the demise in this session of the proposed constitutional amendments to ban same-gender marriage. There is a very good chance that Greta Cammemeyer will come to UH on Oct. 3. Leon Rouse has been in contact with UH officials and Cammemeyer, trying to arrange it. Various UH staff members have been very helpful. Mahalo!
