Date: Thu, 10 Nov 94 09:30:30 HST BEN CAYETANO WINS 4-WAY HAWAII'S GUBERNATORIAL RACE; FAVORS FULL EQUALITY AMONG ALL COUPLES In a tough 4-way race, Democratic candidate Ben Cayetano won against Frank Fasi (a former mayor of Honolulu), Patricia Saiki (former congresswoman), and Kioni Dudley (Green party): approximately 38% to 30/30/2%. Cayetano, the son of a Filipino immigrant, is the first Filipino to hold state-wide office in any part of the U.S. Cayetano came out early for full equality for all couples, regardless of gender. His position is that ALL couples (straight or same sex) should have domestic contracts under the law and that the word ``marriage'' should be left to the private uses of churches. To protect the federal tax deductions of currently married couples in Hawaii, Cayetano's proposal should include language that, for the purposes of the federal government and the other states, Hawaii's domestic contracts are the same as marriage. Cayetano's running mate, Mazie Hirono, came out early and explicitly for same-sex marriage as such. Their joint victory is great news for Hawaii's marriage project. The other candidates ran against same-sex marriage, with Fasi being the most vocal. Fasi ran full page ads in Honolulu's newspapers, emphasizing this difference between him and Ben Cayetano (as well as other differences). The anti-gay Hawaii radicals in Hawaii also ran newspaper ads and TV commercials attacking candidates who were deemed friendly to same-sex marriage. Many of these ads ran in the last week of the campaign. In related news, the official Commission on Sexual Orientation and the Law had its first meeting. At this first meeting, the commission voted to take a year to develop a thorough report. It is not known whether this timetable for the commission meets the political needs and/or desires of the new state government. Tom Ramsey Secretary HERMP Steering Committee P.S.
