No. 912 NINETEENTH LEGISLATURE, 1997 STATE OF HAWAI`I A BILL FOR AN ACT PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE 0F HAWAI`I DEFINING MARRIAGE IN THE STATE OF HAWAI`I. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAI`I: 1 SECTION 1. The purpose of this Act is to Propose an 2 amendment to the Constitution of the State of Hawai`i to define 3 marriage in the State of Hawai`i as a legal association between a 4 man and a woman. 5 SECTION 2. The Constitution of the State of Hawai`i is 6 amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated 7 and to read as follows: 8 "Marriage 9 Section_____. Marriage shall be defined in the State of lO Hawai`i as the legal association reserved exclusively for the 11 lawful union of a man and a woman." 12 SECTION 3. The question to be printed on the ballot shall l3 be as follows: 14 "Shall marriage be defined in Hawai`i as the legal 15 association reserved exclusively for a man and a woman?" 16 SECTION 4. New Constitutional material is underscored. 17 SECTION 5.
