Starting with this morning's edition of the Honolulu Advertiser, a print, radio and television pro-civil rights and pro-same-sex marriage campaign has begun. The print ads run as follows (Takes up 40% of a page) THEY call them "stubborn" WE call the *courageous* Those who would betray Hawai`i's traditional values of tolerance and and acceptance call State Senators Matt Matsunaga, Avery Chumbley, Mike McCartney, and Wayne Metcalf "stubborn." To the rest of us, they're: "Stubborn" like Rosa Parks, when she *sat down in the front* of the bus. "Stubborn" like Gordon Hirabayashi, whe he *stood up against the internment* of Americans of Japanese Ancestry. "Stubborn" like Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, when they *challenged the law against interracial marriage*. "Stubborn" like U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia, when he told Congress: As politicians and elected officials, we should not only follow but we must lead . . . not put our fingers into the air to see which way the air is blowing, but be leaders. I will not turn my back on another American. I will not oppress my fellow human being. I have fought too long and too hard against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up against discrimination based on sexual orientation. ___________________________________________________________________ We commend the these four State Senators and their eleven colleagues for having the courage to stand up for what's right. And we urge everyone in Hawai`i who believes in fairness to contect them and thank them for defending our civil and human rights. We are the Coalition for Equality and Diversity and the Clergy Coalition. Together, we represent dozens of community, non-profit, and civil rights gropus, and the spectrum of Hawai`i's religious community.
