In Honolulu for a few days to attend meetings, both on the marriage issue and with Democratic Party officials. This morning's meeting (3/3/97) went as expected. Both Judiciary Committees of the Hawai`ian House of Representatives and the Senate presented their arguments on HB 117 (the call for a constitutional amendment to define marriage) and HB 118 (a civil right's package for couples that are "otherwise unable to marry.") Both sides defended their positions while trying to get the upperhand for the news bites. There was no movement from either position despite a few heated exchanges. The meeting was recessed 45 minutes after it began. The recess allows for both Judiciary Committees to reconvene at an unspecified time and does not require public notification. I will post more when I return to Kaua`i on Thursday.
