You can begin by reading this message. Although I'm sending it to a bunch of my friends all at once, I'm thinking of each of you. Right now Hawaii is Ground Zero for gay and lesbian civil rights. The right to marry isn't about marriage at all. It's about ending discrimination. It's about equality in the eyes of the law. The first same-gender couples to receive marriage licenses will help dismantle centuries of stereotypes. I can't tell you how many people don't understand that! Please spread the word. Our rights are on the line. We can make a quantum leap in the November 3rd election (my birthday!), or we can wait another 30 years for legislators to grant us the rights we are entitled to NOW. It's up to us! It's up to me and you. A lot of people have thanked me for my commitment and activity. You're welcome. But thanking me--and many others who deserve it--is just a start. It's time to pitch in. If you've been a checkbook activist, thank YOU. Now we need more: we need your time. Are you aware of what happened in Maine? Maine had passed a non-discrimination law. But it was challenged and put to a vote this spring. Polls showed 2/3 support. It looked like a done deal, right? Wrong. It snowed, supporters didn't turn out. We lost 51% to 49%. We don't have snow here; we have sand...businesses...responsibilities...apathy.... SO????? It's time to help, and it can't wait for a more convenient time. The election is 4 months away. Remember (the) Maine. Please don't say you are too busy. You're not too busy for things that are important. When our values are clear, our choices are easy. I know you value our civil rights, so you can squeeze out a few hours for an excellent cause, OUR cause. Two organizations are carrying the torch. Pick one or both: 1. Marriage Project Hawaii is focusing on the GLBT community. They're compiling a database of 40,000 voters who oppose holding a Con Con and oppose the constitutional amendment that would gut our court case. MPH needs volunteers. Call 942-3737. They're located in the Church of the Crossroads, next to the Varsity Theater. Good parking. 2. Protect Our Constitution, is headed by Jackie Young, a dynamic former legislator who is devoted to civil rights. POC is located on Kapahulu, next to Subway, in the same complex as Diamond Head Video. Worker bees are needed, big time. Come this Tuesday, July 7 for a rally at 6:30. Candace Gingrich will speak. Come get inspired. RSVP 739-6263. If you're worried about visibility, this is the group for you. Please join in. With tasks great and small, there's a place for you. Outer island folks, too. Tell me you'll help out. E me or call 595-6682. Bring a friend, too. Just say, I do! in Love & Light, Tracey P.S. I would have gone to the POC office earlier today, but I'm trying to multiply myself by inviting you to come along. I'm going now. See you there soon. Now is the time to do some work to fight the constitutional amendment which seeks to restore the phrase "second class citizens" to our national vocabulary. There is a ton to do at Protect Our Constitution Headquarters, 870 Kapahulu Ave. We are open every day 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. We are doing phone calls every night to registered voters. We need 10 phoners a night, and so far the numbers are only around 4, 5, or 6 per night. There are no sales or telemarketing involved. We ask questions for voter identification, so we can pull our vote out later. Please call me (Margot) at 739-6263, come by the office on Tuesday night at 6:30 to meet Candace, or stop by later this week. Don't put it off! We are already half-way through this campaign! Mahalo. Margot PS As Tracey indicated, POC needs money. Some of the staff, who are putting in 12 and 14 hour days seven days a week, have not been paid in months. They care! And I hope you will too.
