Date: Tue, 28 Jan 1997 08:33:04 -1000 From: SLDN1@aol.com (by way of lambda@aloha.net (Martin Rice)) Subject: Larry King follow up Alert Followup CONGRATULATIONS !! Thanks to all of who called Larry King Live last night and who passed on the word about the action alert. The action was a success. Larry King took only two questions for Secretary Cohen and we got both of them! The first was a from man identified as a "gay officer" who informed Sec. Cohen that military officials continue to ask the orientation of their troops and asked him what he would do to stop such violations. Sec. Cohen responded firmly that this was a violation of the law and should be reported to his office. The second call was a female army officer who asked Sec. Cohen what he would do to stop lesbian-baiting sexual harassment. Sec. Cohen did not dodge lesbian baiting as a sexual harassment issue and stated firmly that there would be "zero tolerance" for sexual harassment on his watch. You have brought these important issues directly to the attention of the new Secretary of Defense on his first day "on the job" and created a wonderful opportunity for SLDN to follow up with his office. If the first caller from last night is out there, please contact us here [either via email or phone (202) 328-3244]. You were great; hitting the nail right on the head. Sec. Cohen specifically invited you to contact his office with reports of "don't ask" violations. We think this is also a great opportunity, especially via an anonymous letter, but do not want you to do so without protection, since, as we all know, being identified as a "gay officer" could endanger your career. Thanks again for all your work. Kirk
