On November 3, 1998, people who care about civil rights in Hawaii and around the nation will face our biggest challenge yet. Voters here will be asked to carve out an exception to the State's Bill of Rights and reverse the historic court case recognizing same-gender marriage. Lesbians, gay men and their allies in Hawaii -- with the support of people like you around the country -- have spent nearly a decade fighting for the right to marry as a matter of basic civil rights. AND WE HAVE WON EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. Now the far right has placed a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot which would reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples only - and re-establish lesbians and gay men as seco nd-class citizens in the eyes of the law. Pat Robertson, the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family and other extremist groups have descended upon the islands. They kicked off their "massive public education campaign" with a strategy session lunch at a Honolulu hotel on June 19 and have already begun tapping their extensive donor networks. I am writing to you to ask for your help in leveling the playing field. Protect Our Constitution, working in association with the Human Rights Campaign, was organized to defeat the constitutional amendment. Our polling and research shows that we can win and that voters respond to our message of fairness and justice. But we badly need financial resources to run an aggressive get-out-the-vote campaign this fall. Your donation of $500, $250, $100, $50 or any amount you can afford will help us get our message of "aloha" to the voters in Hawaii - and in turn send a message to the nation that when it comes to equal rights and equal protection under the law, there are no exceptions. Please do not click to the next e-mail. Write a check payable to "Protect Our Constitution" today and mail it to 870 Kapahulu Ave., Suite No. 110, Honolulu, Hawaii 96816. Then forward this e-mail to your network of friends and family. Visit our new web site at www.POC-Hawaii.org for more information about our campaign. Mahalo! P.S. Hawaii law limits donations to $1000 per individual for this effort - so we need a broad base of support. That's why we're counting on yo u.
