The Paradise Ride What: A bicycle ride to raise funds to fight AIDS in Hawai`i Who: The five major AIDS Service Organizations of Hawai`i: Life Foundation (O`ahu) Maui AIDS Foundation (Maui, Moloka`i & Lana`i) Big Island AIDS Project (Hilo) West Hawai`i AIDS Foundation (Kona) Malama Pono (Kaua`i) Where: On the four major islands of Hawai`i (the Big Island, Maui, Kaua`i & O`ahu) When: August 8-15, 1998 ISLAND EVENT DAYS DATES The Big Island of Hawai`i Rider Check-in and Orientation Aug. 8 Ride 1 & 2 Aug. 9-10 Maui Ride 3 & 4 Aug. 11-12 Kaua`i Ride 5 & 6 Aug. 13-14 O`ahu Ride & Closing Ceremony 7 Aug. 15 Why: To raise funds for the AIDS Service Agencies of Hawai`i which provide a comprehensive range of programs including education, prevention services, counseling and other critical services to those affected by HIV and AIDS. Non-profit and volunteer-based, these agencies are the fron line in Hawai`i's battle against AIDS and rely heavily on private sector funding. More About it: The Paradise Ride is a fully supported, seven day, 350 mile-plus bicycle ride on four of the Hawai`ian Islands to rasie funds to fight AIDS in Hawai`i. Each participant agrees to raise at least $2,000 for these charities. Riders will ride over a pre-determined route on each island, camping overnight in Ride campgrounds. Riders provide their own sleeping bag, tent, bicycle, and gear. The Ride provides food, showers, fully supported campgrounds and aid stations along the route each day, and transportation. Riders are monitored each day by event vehicles to assure and promote safety. Riders, their bicycles and gear will be transported between islands by air. Registration Fee: The registration fee covers all inter-island transportation costs for riders: $200 for non-Hawai`i residents/$150 for Hawai`i residents Goals: The Paradise Ride is committed to achieving its goal of returning at least 75 percent of contributions raised by riders to the agencies benefiting from the event. To that end, the event Producer, The Chabin Group, West Hollywood, Calif., has agreed to accept as full compensation for its services a maximum of 15 cents of each dollar raised by riders. (The Chabin Group does not receive any other compensation from other sources, including corporate donations, registration fees, ad sales, etc.) The corporations, businesses and communities of Hawai`i are being asked to underwrite the costs of the event to ensure that Ride goals are met.
