Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 16:12:40 -1000 From: HawaiiGay1@aol.com (by way of lambda@aloha.net (Martin Rice)) Subject: HAWAI`I: 700 Club - NOW off KITV Channel 4 Aloha auwinala kakou. This great news was just broadcast by my friend Bill Woods (hawaiigay1@aol.com) in Honolulu: Aloha Folks, It is finally true - the Pat Robertson's 700 Club - is no longer broadcast from a commercial station in Hawaii. Channel 4 KITV no longer has this offensive program on their broadcast lineup. For several months a small group (who has had a history of identifying programming (radio and TV) that makes erroneous, misleading, discrimination-promotion, or hate oriented programming against Gay men and women) has been reviewing the local showing of the 700 Club on KITV and their broadcasting policies in preparation for a formal challenge. Since the process began about three months ago we have had several communications with the station on their broadcast policies; i.e. ethics, fairness, and truthfulness in program broadcasting practices. We were purposefully planning to make the formal challenge after the legislative session was over. In the interim the station on its own elected not to continue the program. It is not clear on what basis the program was actually stopped. We could not confirm if the station actually cancelled a contract, contract ran out and was not renewed by either side, etc. However, the program is off the air in the projected time-frame our group had established before a boycott was to commence. Also, we have been in communication with Rev. Mel White who has created a unique video as an open letter to Robertson where many of Robertson's erroneous and misrepresentations have been documented. Rev. White and I were planning to use the Hawaii experience with challenging the broadcasting of this program as a model for similar attempts in other cities. Fortunately, Hawaii did not have to go the formal route. The 700 Club is still seen in Hawaii on the cable network CBN - Christian Broadcast Network, which is owned by Robertson. However, it is not using FCC airwaves to bring its evil message into our homes. Our group is looking for other programming that may deliterious to Gay people. If you are aware of any here in Hawaii, please drop us a line via this email address. Bill Woods Ad Hoc Committee to Eliminate Erroneous and Unfair Broadcast Programming
