The maid, Richard (er, handyman, janitor) was a lifetime resident and surfer. About 40 years old and overwhelming and friendly, he knew where *everything* was. He had tons of great ideas of things to do, and also found Norval some greenery that was probably not as good on pasta, equally expensive, but far, far more enjoyable than our previous herbal purchase. The food in Pahoa was great, the guys at the Village Inn wonderful, and there were tons of fascinating things to do. We went to the natural steam caves one evening and met a neat guy from Hilo who we chatted to for hours. Richard also directed us to a wonderful nude blacksand beach. Unique. The Pahoa hippies playing wooden flutes and doing tantric and mellow things, the black sand crabs scuttling across the black sand, the huge waves that would pick you up and crash you back and forth along the sand over and over and over again- we couldn't tear ourselves away. ...the Hotel Honolulu is exceptional. The room, the location, the staff, and even the other guests were all quite wonderful. Ate many many meals at Hamburger Marys. It really is great. Except for the coconut pancakes with coconut syrup. There is such a thing as too much. Had a quick look at Queens Surf Beach- we didn't really spend that much time in Waikiki. Overwhelming attitude, but beautiful people. Sim: yes, it was a lot like Miami- the part I saw, anyway. There's also a beautiful gay B&B in Kauai, recommended by numerous people, near a semi-private ocean beach...check with your travel agent.
