Yesterday, the Cobb County (Georgia-a suburb of Atlanta) Council voted 5-0 to cut off all arts funding so as to sidestep the issue of funding art that was homoerotic or didn't fit into nice, yuppie, conservative Marietta's value system. Leading this drive and a recent resolution condemning homosexuality was a man named Wysong who on Nightline claimed that homosexuals have anywhere from 3-500 sexual partners, that it is a behavioral disorder, that homosexuality itself is against the law, and that wer "choose" to be gay. He also said that civil rights should only be for immutable, inborn characteristics such as gender and race. The opposing "gay rights activist" from San Francisco did an ok job but missed pointing out that protection of religious CHOICE is a current civil right. Wysong is one sick puppy who apparently doesn't understand Goergia law, doesn't understand the full implications of coverage of only inborn characteristics and who likened inborn homosexuality as like a predisposition to alcoholism (without seeing the illogic of his resolution which by analogy should have condemned alcoholic drinking rather than alcoholism...or homosexuality in this case.) I intend on calling Cobb County, Marietta, etc. and letting them have a piece of my mind...since they won't be getting any tourist dollars of mine. Here are the companies that appear to be located /HQ'd in Cobb Co.: Electrolux Corp., 2300 Windy Ridge Pkwy., Suite 900, Marietta, GA 30067 (404) 933-1000 (800) 243-9078 2. Subaru of America, Owner Service Manger Southeast Region Subaru, 220 The Bluffs, Austell, GA 30001 (404) 732-3200 3. Six Flags Over Georgia is also in Cobb Co. and is owned by Paramout Pictures now, I think (?). The Georgia Dept. of Tourism is 404-656-3590 I want to find out the # for Marietta/Kennasaw and let them know that I won't be staying in Cobb Co. during the Olympics or anything else. Not a big blow, but what the heh... The images of demonstrators (anti-gay) were horrible including one man who had a sign: "Praise God for AIDS". If anyone has any other ideas of how to let Cobb Co. know that hate is not acceptable in the US, let me know. I also want them to know that their Councilman Wysong is gonna cost them money and investments. ______________________________________________________________________ Jeff Jones Department of Geography JAJONE02@ukcc.uky.edu University of Kentucky
