[The August 11th San Francisco Chronicle (citing "Chronicle Wire Services" as its source) carries this story:] GEORGIA COUNTY CONDEMNS GAY LIFESTYLE Marietta, Ga. - The Cobb County Commission yesterday approved a resolution condemning what it called the "gay lifestyle" and threatening to deny county funds to arts projects deemed incompatible with "community standards". The resolution, passed 3 to 1, says "lifestyles advocated by the gay community should not be endorsed by government policymakers because they are incompatible with the standards to which this community subscribes." It says the county, which has a $125,000-a-year arts budget, should not finance "those activities which seek to contravene these existing community standards." While not legally binding, county commissioners may cite the resolution in asking state legislators to deny public money for job and health insurance benefits to unmarried "domestic partners". The action was criticized by civil-liberties groups and some prominent artists, including actress Joanne Woodward, who grew up in Marietta Woodward sent a letter to the commissioners saying she was "shocked and dismayed to learn of their efforts to dictate family values". Commissioner Gordon Wysong said he introduced the resolution partly in reaction to the decision last week by the city of Atlanta, about thirty miles to the southwest, to extend job benefits to domestic partners.
