The Poverello Food Bank and Thrift Store, which serves over 3,000 men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, announced that it has successfully completed it's annual Feinstein Foundation, Food for the Hungry, matching grant drive. The Center, through its caring friends and loving supporters, raised over $35,000 during the month of March which the Feinstein Foundation will match, under a capped grant amount of one million dollars, for all participating agencies. On April 20th, Ms. Cindy White, the Executive Director of the Broward County Bar announced that, "Fr. William F. Collins, O.F.M., Founder of the Poverello Center, will received the prestigious Liberty Bell Award from their Association." The Honorable Melanie G. May, Circuit Judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, informed Poverello that, "The award is given each year to a person, who has demonstrated outstanding service to the community and strengthened the American system of freedom under the law." Honors will be presented on Wednesday, April 26th, at the Law Day luncheon being held at the Tower Club, located at One Financial Plaza, Ft. Lauderdale. Poverello, which operates on a yearly budget of approximately two million dollars, a part and full-time staff of 9, and a volunteer base of 125 women and men, derives much of its income from donated goods sold through its thrift store, personal contribu- tions and a variety of grants. Monthly, the Center distributes food for over 90,000 meals. As a result of support received from the Community Foundation of Broward, the food bank has inaugurated a specialized nutrition program for several home-bound clients unable to fend for themselves.
