Date: Sat, 25 Jan 1997 19:54:35 -0500 (EST) From: A Jay Eddy Subject: FL State Sen. Grant - Cancel Louganis January 25, 1997 Letters to The Editor: CONSERVATIVE FUNDAMENTALIST DEMONIZES GUEST SPEAKER Tampa's Senator John Grant, chairman of the Florida Senate Education Committee, has publicly demonized five-time Olympic gold-medal winner Greg Louganis because of the swimmer's sexual orientation. Senator Grant, by his actions, has seemingly challenged the right of non-heterosexuals to free-responsible speech in a Florida State institution which is apparently funded through taxes, fees and public contributions. Such bias action again points to a growing fear among Americans that a cherished Constitutional safeguard, "Freedom from Religious Persecution," is still under siege from political fundamentalists who act as Inquisitors rather than servants of all of the people. Neil Cohen, director of the university's lecture series, should be commended on allowing Louganis and the community the right to speak and listen to what is troubling young men and women who are being driven from their social and religious institutions because of intolerance and subliminal hate.
