ORLANDO TO LAUNCH PROJECT BUY-COTT

(Orlando, May 19, 1994)  Several local organizations including The
Rainbow Democratic Club and The Metropolitan Business Association have
formed a task force to lead a Central Florida area BUYcott effort.
Project BUYcott, a process to educate and inform businesses and
consumers in the greater metropolitan Orlando area, will survey
organizations and business establishments to document their policies of
sexual orientation non-discrimination.

A similar effort based in the Tampa Bay area has become very successful
and has received notoriety as a proactive, non-confrontational method of
documenting to the local gay and lesbian community, those businesses who
welcome so-called "gay money." To date, several thousand businesses have
attested that they have a policy in place that forbids discrimination
against its employees and customers, on the basis of sexual orientation.

Michael Hodges, Chair of the Rainbow Democratic Club's Political Action
Committee said, "The strength of the Lesbian and Gay community lies in
our economic power." He went on to say that once the BUYcott information
has been gathered, "we will have a tool and guide available to us, so
that we will not unknowingly patronize a business that is not concerned
with civil and human rights for everyone."
