Department of Justice Statement on Haitians at Guantanamo To: National Desk Contact: U.S. Department of Justice, Public Affairs, 202-514-2007 WASHINGTON, April 1 -- The following statement was released today by the U.S. Department of Justice: The government will not seek a stay of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York's Interim Order in Haitian Centers Council Inc. vs. Chris Sale, Acting Commissioner, Immigration and Naturalization Service. The government will comply with the order regarding a limited number of the Haitians who have tested positive with the HIV virus currently on Guantanamo. There are two classes of Haitians who are covered by the order -- those with T-cell counts below 200 and those whose T-cell percentage is 13 or below. Under the terms of the order, 36 Haitians will be brought to the United States as soon as appropriate arrangements can be made. The government is activating a Resettlement Task Force consisting of the Community Relations Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, the Public Health Services and other appropriate agencies to implement the court's decision. This action is taken to comply with the court's order and does not represent a change in general policy. -30- -- Nigel Allen, Toronto, Ontario, Canada ndallen@r-node.hub.org
