It's a tiny (about 4,000 year-round population) seacoast resort that, in summer swells with an influx of tens of thousands of vacationers and beach goers. And, for the past 20 or more years, it's also been the destination of choice for lesbian and gay travelers from throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Rehoboth has extensive and beautiful beaches, including two predominantly gay beaches, Carpenter's Beach (known affectionately as "Poodle Beach") at the south end of the mile-long boardwalk, and North Beach, a quieter expanse of beach at the far north end of town. In the center of town on the boardwalk, you'll find a typical string of giftshops, arcades, and a small amusement park with rides and games. That's where heterosexuals tend to congregate. The gay community is centered on two streets: Baltimore Avenue and Wilmington Avenue (each of which flanks the main drag, Rehoboth Ave.). The second block of Baltimore Ave., in particular, is packed with gay-owned, gay-friendly shops, restaurants, and bars (including our own Lambda Rising bookstore), as well as CAMP Rehoboth, the local non-profit gay group (CAMP stands for "Creative a More Positive Rehoboth"). Pick up a free copy of the local gay magazine, "Letters from CAMP Rehoboth," at 39 Rehoboth Ave. It will give you lots of information about events and places to go. Up until a few years ago, homophobia was a serious problem with the tourists, residents, and city officials. But things have changed dramatically, thanks in part to a new police chief who is very gay-supportive and who mandates sensitivity training for all officers each year. Now, though you may occasionally hear a "faggot" comment yelled from a passing car, you're just as likely to hear sirens following closely as the police stop and arrest the offenders. A few years ago, you might encounter plain clothes officers on the boardwalk at night, trying to entrap gay men who cruise there; now the officers are still there, but to guard against gay bashing incidents. (There have been only one or two gay bashing incidents reported this year, with no serious injuries, and arrests were made promptly each time.) The Metropolitan Community Church has an active congregation there (they are currently involved in a fundraising campaign so they can build their own church). Although the summer season officially ends with Labor Day, the period from Labor Day to Halloween is very popular with lesbians and gays because the town is less crowded, motels and guest houses charge less, and the parking meters get turned off! :-) (In summer, take plenty of quarters!) Have a great trip! /s/ Deacon Maccubbin ======================================================== LAMBDA RISING BOOKSTORES - E-mail address: lambdarising@his.com Every Gay & Lesbian Book in Print - Videos, Music, & Gifts, Too!
