NATIONAL YOUTH ADVOCACY COALITION JOB POSTING - PLEASE DISTRIBUTE HEALTH PROMOTION EDUCATOR ORGANIZATION SUMMARY: The National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC) is a DC-based non-profit whose mission is to advocate for and with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) in an effort to end discrimination against these youth and to ensure their physical and emotional well being. NYAC is committed to supporting local and national organizing within a multi-issue social justice framework whereby LGBT youth of all races, ethnicities, class backgrounds, and gender identities live to their fullest potential. POSITION SUMMARY: The Health Promotion Educator (HPE) is responsible for incorporating HIV/STD and unintended pregnancy prevention activities and general health promotion for LGBT youth throughout NYAC's programs. The HPE position is supported with a five-year grant from the Division of Adolescent School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DASH/CDC). The position is supervised by the Deputy Director of Programs. HIRING SALARY RANGE: $28,000 TO $31,000 and benefits RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 1) Proactively promote the availability of NYAC's information, technical assistance, and training on issues of youth involvement, peer education, peer outreach, GLBT cultural competency, and youth friendly service delivery with regard to HIV/STD prevention; 2) Provide technical assistance to local, state and national organizations to strengthen their ability to reduce HIV/STD and unintended pregnancy rates among GLBT youth; 3) Incorporate Health Promotion workshops into each of NYAC's Regional Conferences; 4) Maintain and gather statistics related to the physical and mental health of GLB youth, latest journal publications and annotated bibliographies of related books; 5) Identify model programs for meeting the physical and mental health needs of GLBT youth; 6) Participate in the production of NYAC's Membership Update Newsletter; 7) Represent NYAC at conferences and meetings with other organizations and coalitions; 8) Assure compliance with activities and requirements set forth for position in contract between NYAC and DASH/CDC; 9) Provide monthly activity report to NYAC Deputy Director of Programs; and 10) Other responsibilities as required. SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE MANY OF THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Demonstrated understanding of, and experience in, unintended pregnancy prevention, HIV/STDs prevention, and other physical/mental health issues faced by LGBT youth; 2) Demonstrated experience in providing training, technical assistance and information on LGBT health issues; 3) An understanding of, and demonstrated commitment to, the issues faced by LGBT youth; 4) An understanding of, and demonstrated commitment to, addressing LGBT youth issues in the context of multi-issue, social justice work; 5) Awareness of people of color, immigrant and/or LGBT resources and organizations available in the field; 6) Ability to work in and with multiracial, multicultural, and/or multi-lingual organizations and programs addressing the needs of low income and/or communities of color; 7) Strong computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills including phone, email, and in person; and 8) BA degree in related field strongly preferred.
