The Gallaudet University Student Body Government has planned a number of activities, including exhibits, an opening ceremony and awards presentation, and a candlelight vigil. All members of the University community are welcome to attend. Explains event chairperson Matthew Martinez, "The purpose of World AIDS Day is to encourage public support for and the development of programs to prevent the spread of HIV infection and to educate the general public on the issues regarding HIV/AIDS. This effort is an international one to broaden the understanding and acceptance of HIV/AIDS." HIV/AIDS awareness exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ely Center Multipurpose Room. Participating organizations include the Health Promotion and Education Unit of the Office of Student Development, Whitman-Walker Clinic, Deaf AIDS Action, and the National Coalition on the Deaf Community and HIV/AIDS. The evening program begins at 8 p.m. in Chapel Hall, with welcoming remarks by Gallaudet University President I. King Jordan, Student Body Government President Jonathan Kovacs, and Gallaudet Interpreting Service deaf/blind specialist Steven Collins. Gallaudet student and AIDS activist Michael P. Felts will be keynote speaker. Following the keynote address, the National Conference Planning Committee on AIDS and the Deaf Community will present awards to several individuals and organizations. "We also want to remember Gallaudet alumni who have died of AIDS-related viruses," Martinez says. A candlelight vigil and walk around campus, ending with five minutes of silence in front of the Tower Clock, will preserve the memory of departed alumni and members of the deaf community.
