Holt Jr." GAYS AND LESBIANS AGAINST IMMORAL LIFESTYLES IMPLORES COLORADO FOR FAMILY VALUES TO CONDEMN BENSON CANDIDACY Denver, September 27, 1994 -- Gays and Lesbians Against Immoral Lifestyles today sent the following letter by facsimile to Kevin Tebedo and Will Perkins of Colorado For Family Values: Gays and Lesbians Against Immoral Lifestyles Box 7327 Boulder, CO 80306 September 27, 1994 VIA FACSIMILE Kevin Tebedo Executive Director Will Perkins Chairperson Colorado For Family Values 719-577-4916 Dear Messers. Tebedo and Perkins: As Mr. Perkins so eloquently put it in your December 14, 1993 press conference, families are at the heart of this country's social fabric and anything that destabilizes families should be opposed. Furthermore, gentlemen, I am sure you will agree with social critics, on all parts of the political spectrum, who say the No. 1 cause for the break up of familes is divorce. Indeed, divorce is by its definition the breakup of familes. And probably the No. 1 cause for divorce is adultery. In a seminal conservative work, "Dan Quayle Was Right," published in the April 1993 issue of the Atlantic Monthly, Barbara Dafoe Whitehead writes, "In the 1950's most Americans believed that parents should stay in an unhappy marriage for the sake of the children. The assumption was that divorce would damage the children, and the prospect of such damage gave divorce its meaning. By the mid 1970's a majority of Americans rejected that view." Indeed, Whiteheads fundamental argument is that the destigmatization of divroce is the reason we are now plagued by a breakdown of many families and a high illegitimacy rate. Therefore, I am sure that you would agree that it would be tragic to destigmatize divorce further bu electing a divorcer and admitted adulterer governor of the state of Colorado. The election of Bruce Bebson as governor would send the worng message to Colorado families. The message is that 'it's OK to cheat on your spouse, abandon your spouse, and then raid the family house, mistress in tow. Bruce Benson did it, and he's governor.' 'It's OK to drive drunk, get caught, evade the law, and drive drunk again. Bruce Benson did it, and he's governor.' In short, Bruce Benson's election would put the government's stamp of approval on an immoral and destructive lifestyle. Therefore, Kevin and Will, I implore you to join Gays and Lesbains Against Immoral Lifestyles in condemning Bruce Besson's candidacy for governor. Do it for the family. Sincerely, Rick Cendo President Gays and Lesbians Against Immoral Lifestyles
