Daily Camera reprinted without permission Boulder, Colorado 02/03/93 Telluride voters approve gay-protection ordinance Associated Press TELLURIDE -- Voters in this mountain resort approved an anti-discrimination ordinance Tuesday night that includes protections for homosexuals -- marking the first municipal counterattack against Amendment 2. By a vote of 484 to 151, Telluride outlawed discrimination in housing, employment and public services based on sexual orientation, race, gender, religion and other categories. The measure directly opposes Amendment 2, which prohibits the passing of laws that protect gays from discrimination. A Denver District judge last month suspended the measure, which was approved by voters Nov. 3, pending a court challenge. Telluride and surrounding San Miguel County voted heavily against Amendment 2, as did most Colorado counties that rely heavily on ski traffic for tourism and income. Many ski and tourism officials worry the boycott called to protest Amendment 2 will hurt their business. Voters in Denver and Boulder counties also opposed the amendment. The Telluride law will not only protect local residents from bias, but also will send the message that Telluride welcomes all visitors, said Zeb Landsman, a local attorney who drafted the new ordinance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Corrections, new info, and requests for info: amend2-info@cs.colorado.edu Administrative comments : amend2-mod@cs.colorado.edu General Discussion : amend2-discuss@cs.colorado.edu Boulder/Denver area local meetings/events : amend2-local@cs.colorado.edu ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe to a list, send mail to Majordomo@cs.colorado.edu, with subscribe in the BODY of the message.
