The conference "Winning Strategies: Developing a National Approach to Securing Civil Rights," will address developing national, state, and local strategies for protecting and advancing broad-based civil rights for all people. Although the gay and lesbian community is the high-profile target of efforts to limit civil rights, well-funded and well-organized campaigns backed by opponents of civil rights have surfaced in every state. Targets include school curricula, reproductive choice and minority communities. The response to this national attack has been fragmented. Conference topics include: - Understanding the background and strategies of civil rights opponents; - Building cohesive, effective grassroots coalitions; - Developing political strategy; - Understanding the media and the message; - Organizing campaigns - logistics and legalities; - Case studies: Colorado's Amendment 2, San Diego, Oregon and others. Speakers include Dr. Manning Marable, columnist ("Along the Color Line") and Director of the African-American Institute, Columbia University; John Buchanan, Vice-President of Public Policy, People for the American Way; David Mixner, adviser to President Clinton and gay rights activist; Celinda Lake, pollster, Mellman, Lake, Lazarus; Nancy Yanofsky, Executive Director, Pro-Choice Resource Center; Pacy Markman, media strategist, who was successful against Oregon's anti-gay Initiative 9; and Tim McFeeley, Executive Director, Human Rights campaign Fund. The conference is expected to attract several hundred representatives from Colorado, other states currently facing initiatives similar to Colorado's Amendment 2, voters concerned with protecting broad based civil rights, people of color organizations, public educators state and local elected officials, legal organizations, religious groups affected by civil rights opponents, tourism, and the business community. Endorsers of the October conference include US representatives Pat Schroeder, David Skaggs, and Gerry Studds, People for the American Way, Concerned Republicans, Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, Colorado Legal Initiatives Project (CLIP) and National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. CARE, the conference host, is a non-profit corporation based in Denver. The organization's membership includes civic, business, religious, arts, and gay institutions, corporations, and individuals. Members believe that discrimination based on sexual orientation is an infringement of basic rights and sets a dangerous precedent in Colorado and the nation. ###
